Butterfly – answers

1. Butterflies lay eggs, from which the caterpillars hatch.  The caterpillar turns into a chrysalis or cocoon.  Inside the chrysalis the caterpillar goes through a process called ‘metamorphosis’ and a butterfly emerges, so the four stages are:
   • egg
   • caterpillar
   • chrysalis
   • butterfly
2. Bet you were going to say 2, in fact they have 4 wings.
3. Caterpillars eat leaves and butterflies mostly drink nectar.
4. A butterfly is able to taste objects with its feet as they have things called taste receptors built into the feet.
5. A butterfly rests with its wings closed, while a moth rests with its wings open. Butterflies feed during the day and moths feed mostly at night and butterflies have long thin antennae where as a moth has short stubby feathery antenna.
6. There are 59 species of butterflies that you could see in the UK, 57 of them are resident species and two migrate to the UK.
