Fox – answers

1. The fox belongs to the dog or canine family.  But in the fox world the female is called a vixen, and the male is called a dog.  The young are called cubs, pups or kits.
2. Foxes will eat just about anything, including berries, worms, spiders, small animals and birds. If the fox lives in towns or cities, then they will eat our leftover rubbish.  If they have too much food, a fox will store it in a small hole for later.
3. A fox lives in a hole in the ground called a den or earth, in towns they are often dug out under garden sheds.
4. A fox can live for up to 14 years (9 years recorded in the wild) but this is more usually 1 to 4 years.
5. Surprisingly the fox shares many similarities to cats, they are most active at night, have eyes very similar to cats to allow them to see better in low light.  The fox has very sensitive whiskers, just like cats, and is the only member of the dog family who can climb trees.
6. The Hunting Act 2004 outlawed hunting with dogs in England and Wales.  This remains a very controversial piece of legislation.
