Toad – answers
- An amphibian is a creature that lives part of its life in water.
- A toad has a warty skin, and a frog has smooth shin. A frog will hop, but a toad walks, and a frog spends more of its time in or around water where as a toad only returns to water to mate in early spring each year.
- Toads will eat a wide variety of different things, including insects, worms, spiders and slugs. Larger toads will even eat slow worms, small grass snakes and harvest mice.
- A toad has 3 key stages of life: eggs, known as toad spawn, this is different to frog spawn: frogs lay large clumps of spawn whereas the toad lays long strings of spawn among water plants. This stage lasts for around 10 days. The 2nd stage, is when they hatch to become tadpoles, they will spend around 2 to 3 months before they gradually become adults. An adult toad will live typically live approximately 10 to 12 years.
- Toads are not poisonous but do have toxins in their skin to put off other animals such as foxes and badgers from eating them. So if you have handled a toad, always wash your hands afterwards. Fact: you cannot get warts from toads, this is an old wives’ tale.
